ITIN Applications
An ITIN is a tax identification number for people who need to file a US tax return but cannot get a Social Security number. We prepare the application, organize the documents the IRS requires, and file it together with your return.
Who Needs An ITIN
- You have income to report to the IRS but are not eligible for a Social Security number.
- You are the spouse or dependent of someone filing a US return and need to be listed on it.
- Your existing ITIN has expired — the IRS expires ITINs that have not been used on a return for three consecutive years.
- You need one to comply with a withholding or reporting requirement.
What We Do
- Complete the IRS application accurately, in English, with you.
- Check your identity and foreign-status documents against what the IRS actually accepts, before anything is mailed.
- Prepare the tax return that has to accompany the application in most cases.
- Handle renewals for ITINs that have expired.
- Explain exactly what happens next, and what to do if the IRS writes back asking for more.
Straight Answers
- Yes — you can file a tax return and receive a refund with an ITIN.
- An ITIN is for tax purposes only. It is not work authorization, it is not immigration status, and it does not change your status in any way.
- ITIN filers are generally not eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Other credits, such as the Child Tax Credit, depend on your dependents' own numbers and circumstances — we check yours specifically rather than guessing.
- The IRS charges no fee for the application itself. Our fee is for preparing it, and we tell you that number before we start.
- Processing time is set by the IRS and varies with the season. We will tell you the current expectation — we will not promise you a date we do not control.
What To Bring
Bring what you have. If something is missing we will tell you exactly what to get — come in anyway rather than waiting.
For each person who needs a number
- A valid, unexpired passport if you have one — it is the single document that proves both identity and foreign status.
- If there is no passport: a national ID card, foreign birth certificate, foreign driver's licence, or consular ID, plus a second supporting document.
- For a child: a foreign birth certificate, and school or medical records if the child is a minor.
For the return that goes with it
- All income records for the year — W-2s, 1099s, or your own record of what you earned.
- Names, dates of birth and numbers for a spouse and any dependents.
- Last year's return, if you have one.
Your information stays here. We prepare and file tax documents. We are not attorneys, we do not give immigration legal advice, and we do not share your file with anyone except the government agency your application is addressed to — and only when you have told us to file it.
